The
Slovenian Coast
Although
the Slovenian coastline is only 46,5 kilometres long, it shares all
the characteristics of the Mediterranean. A nice warm climate, beautiful
beaches, the clean Adriatic sea and historical coast towns make it an
attractive holiday destination.
The
port of roses Portoro is undoubtedly the most important town of
the Slovenian coast. Here are the great hotels situated with their health
resorts for which Portoro is famous. But also the beautiful boulevard
with numerous shops, restaurants and the Grand Casino makes it a real
tourism paradise.
Piran, Izola and Koper are three of the oldest coastal towns. From a historical
point of view Piran is the most interesting. This old fishing villages
is more than 400 years old and hasn’t changed much over the years.
Piran is built on a peninsula and surrounded by ancient walls. The narrow
streets with tight houses are a special charm of the town. The Italian
influence is still present in their names. At the Tartini square you find
a statue of the famous composer and violinist Guiseppe Tartini (1692-1770)
who was born in Piran.
Koper is an industrial centre and it is Slovenia’s only major port.
It is the second largest Adriatic port after Venice and it is still growing
rapidly. Therefore the port of Koper symbolizes a real gateway to the
world.
To the south of Koper lies Izola. This town has maintained its traditional
activity fishing. Every day fresh fish is sold in the large market hall
just outside the centre. Besides fish, Izola is also known for its art.
Many painters have their studio in one of the picturesque shops where
you can buy their work. From Izola it is also easy to make a trip to Venice.
In the summer the fast ferry ‘The Prince of Venice’ sails
a few times a week up and down to Venice.
In the past the Slovenian coast was also famous for its salt-making. Today
most of the saltpans in Sečovlje,
Strunjan and Lucija are not active anymore, but they are still open for
those who enjoy long walks through a special landscape.
There
are many reasons for paying the Slovenian coast a visit. Unfortunately
we can only show you a fragtion ofits beauty. Therefore if you are making
plans for your next holidays, take a moment and think of all the Slovenian
Coast has to offer. Why not something different this year, why not Slovenia!
